Last week was a very interesting time for all scientists using yeast in their research, as we hosted the 38th International Specialized Symposium on Yeasts „Yeast – The Omni-Tool” (ISSY38) in Poland. The meeting gathered many distinguished scientists from 36 countries from all over the world, including such noble names as the ISSY38’s keynote speakers: James E. Haber (USA), Jens Nielsen (Denmark), Judith Berman (Israel), Duccio Cavalieri (Italy), Mark Hochstrasser (USA), Gianni Liti (France), Kevin J. Verstrepen (Belgium), Xin-Qing Zhao (China) and Terrence Cooper (USA) .
The ISSY38 was held in Warsaw, September 1–5, at the Old Library Building in the historical Campus of Warsaw University. The conference was organized by the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, and Warsaw University as one of the serial conferences led by the International Commission on Yeasts. It was a unique occasion that the conference from this series was hosted in Poland, as each year a different country hosts one.
As co-chairs of the ISSY38, Adrianna Skoneczna (Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences) and Zbigniew Lazar (Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences), we want to sincerely thank all people and organizations that made this meeting successful. We thank the Director of IBB PAS, Prof. Jarosław Poznański, and the Rector of UW, Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, for taking this event under their patronage; Prof. Florian Bauer, Prof. Diethard Mattanovich, and Prof. Vivien Measday from the ICY, for their strong support. We thank the International Scientific Committee and Session Chairs for the excellent selection of speakers and for their hard work in the Awards Committee, as well as the Local Committee for the smooth ISSY38 organization. We thank the meeting honorary patrons, i.e., the Polish Biochemical Society and the Biotechnology Section of the Polish Academy of Sciences; ISSY38 sponsors: Polish Airlines LOT, Lallemand, Bionet, LPPeqiupment Warsaw, Alchem, TT-ThermoKing, Lab-Jot, L’Opera Winnica, Złoty Pies Browar Restauracja; and finally the sponsors of Prizes for young researchers presentations, namely, Prof. Wacław Szybalski Foundation, Polish Biochemical Society, the Genetic Society of America, G3, Genetics, FEMS Yeast research, and Yeast (Wiley). Many thanks to WhyNotTravel for perfect organization, Katering Jaron for tasty food, and everyone who contributed to the organization of this meeting. However, the ISSY38 would not have been such a success if not for its participants – it was your presence, the high quality of your research, and your inspiring presentations and discussions that made this conference such a success. We are happy to say that among 82 lecturers from all over the world, we had 14 talks performed by people working in nine different Polish scientific institutions (i.e., Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of Polish Academy of Sciences, University of Warsaw, Warsaw University of Technology, University of Rzeszow, Poznan University of Life Sciences, Adam Mickiewicz University, Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences, University of Agriculture in Kraków, Warsaw University of Life Sciences). We are more than happy that we could contributed in presenting the Polish research to the international society.
